Urbanity on Film

Welcome to Urbanity, a collaborative presentation between The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers and Truck Gallery.  The project is designed to go out to our audiences in the fabulous city of Calgary with the use of Truck’s CAMPER (Contemporary Art Mobile Public Exhibition Rig).   There we will put on four separate outdoor film screenings, using the CAMPER as a projection booth.

We distributed an international call for submssions in June 2009 and the response was overwhelming.  By the time the call finished, we had over 24 hours of films to watch and jury.  The programming jury worked hard through the lovely month of July, watching films until their eyes were square, and came up with a final selection of 47 films from around the globe.   This selection includes films from Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto, exhibited with international artists from Hong Kong, the UK, the US, Spain, Austria and Portugal.  It varies from narrative dramas, to experimental films to documentaries about urban living.

Join us in September 2009 to view these fabulous films at a great price (FREE!).   Explore our city, your city and everything in between.

The dates and locations for the screenings are as follows:

Friday September 11 @ 8:30 (Tomkins Park)
Friday September 18 @ 8:30 (Whitehorn Community Association)
Friday September 25 @ 8:30 (U of C – Art Parkade Loading dock)
Friday October 2 @ 8:30 (CSIF Offices)

ESSAY: Urbanity on Film by Roger Beebe

---

The CSIF worked with TRUCK Gallery in September 2009 to run the Urbanity Project. It was comprised of a series of outdoor film screenings in the theme of Urbanity. Each screening was hosted from TRUCKʼs mobile residency space (CAMPER) and was located in a different quadrant of the city. Each screening offered a different collection of short films based on the theme, and was programmed to highlight issues that were appropriate for each community. As part of an effort to increase audience participation and dialogue, program guides were printed and distributed at each of the screenings throughout the month. These guides worked to increase the viewerʼs understanding of the films and the program itself. Critical writing in the guide includedProgrammerʼs Notes, Juryʼs Notes, an article by the Artist in Residence, Kyle Whitehead, on his process and how he thought film was an appropriate medium to explore Urbanity, and finally an article by Roger Beebe, a renowned American professor of film and independent artist. Many of his works focus on the city and the exploration of it through the film medium, and his essay focused on the study of the urban with film throughout the mediumʼs history. In addition to these essays, we also provided opportunities for audience development and dialogue through the online blog (http://urbanityonfilm.wordpress.com). The audience was encouraged to provide their own thoughts and drawings with ballots included in the program guides, which were then posted on the blog. Along with that, we posted our own thoughts on the program and continued the writing and discussion with the online medium.
