Hip Hop vs. Super 8 - CGY

February 01, 2011 Trackback Programming by Bob Alexander Edit

Calgary is not known for it's hip hop.
This is probably not a surprise to you.
Calgary is also not known for it's filmmaking.

But just because rodeos, oil and exorbitant parking costs overshadow other aspects of Calgary when viewed as a macrocosm, doesn't mean that these scenes don't exist.
If anything, because these scenes exist so far from the lime light of Calgary, these scenes are extremely strong and supported by die hards who love the art forms and love an underdog.
CGY, my super 8 short inspired by Dragon Fli Empire's track of the same name, is an attempt to reclassify the Calgary landscape from it's traditional perception. To show the viewer that beneath the business suit, Calgary is being re-interpreted from the microcosm up.

Luke Black's film CGY was created in June 2010 as part of the Hip Hop vs. Super 8 program (a collaboration between the $100 Film Festival and Sled Island Festival).   It will be featured in the upcoming $100 Film Festival (March 3-5, 2011).   www.100dollarfilmfestival.org
